Sergeant Edward J Street was originally from Wellow. He is later found on the Burnley Roll of Honour in 1914 when his award was reported to the local paper by his proud relatives.
Sgt. Street was a member of the Coldstream Guards until his flying career began in 1913. He achieved his Aviators Certificate in March from the Royal Aero Club of the United Kingdom, on completion of his training in a Maurice Farman Biplane at the Central Flying School at Upavon, Wiltshire.
The French Legion of Honour was presented to Sergeant Street for being the first British airman to bring down a German plane.
