The Story So Far: The Editor of the Parish Returns

Last week we mentioned that the editor of the Parish Returns may have been a journalist for the Western Gazette.

Using our own investigative skills we have discovered that the initials JHW are those of Joseph Henry Worner.

We have managed to build an outline of Mr Worner’s life. He was born in Bower Hinton circa. 1868. He married Sarah Jane Hamilton in 1891 when he was 23 and she was 33.

They were living in Sherborne at the time of their marriage and later moved to Yeovil.

The move was likely to have been prompted by Mr Worner’s job at the Gazette, which he started in 1888 and remained until his retirement in 1935.

During his lifetime he was active member of Yeovil society. He was involved in the ‘educational affairs’ of Yeovil, a founder of the Golf Club as well as being a Rotary Club member and Master of the Masonic Lodge.
