First year Fashion and Textiles degree students from Somerset College of Arts and Technology recently enjoyed a tour of the museum stores and archive strongrooms at Somerset Heritage Centre.
The group are working with Somerset Heritage’s Formal Learning Officer, Lizzie Mee, to help produce materials for school sessions as part of the Somerset Remembers project.
The group are using the collections and archival documents to help create a replica item for use in the session. Current ideas range from embroidered postcards to parasols, which the team will complete this autumn.
A key aim of the project is to ensure local schoolchildren learn how the First World War impacted Somerset life and its people.
Somerset Heritage staff members Bethan Murray and Esther Hoyle continue to support the group as they make decisions on their replica item.
These tasks are vital preparation for next year when the ‘Somerset Remembers’ learning session will be available to schools across the county.
