A new First World War collection has been donated to the Somerset Military Museum

The collection relates to Captain Montague Kenneth Ferguson Saunders of the 8th Battalion The Somerset Light Infantry and includes a Military Cross awarded in 1917.

The citation for Saunders’s award states:

For conspicuous gallantry and ability during an attack.  When the C.O. was killed he took command of the battalion, and led it with the utmost skill and determination until severely wounded.

Saunders was presented with his award at Buckingham Palace by King George V in April 1918.

The reverse of the medal has been inscribed.

Captain Saunders came from Bath and was educated at King Edward’s School. The Military Cross and documents will form part of the Somerset Military Museum collection which is housed at the Somerset Heritage Centre.
